I suppose it would be wrong not to do a little write up on Brit's. After all, I went there for "happy hour" twice this week and ended up staying until about 11pm. Oops.
Brit's may be the only hot spot in the Twin Cities I would classify as Iconic. When out-of-towners ask where to go, I proudly point to Brit's. Situated along the Nicollet Mall, across from Orchestra Hall's
Union Jack Flags proudly stand next to American flags as they triumphantly hover over 11th street from the top of the terrace. Expect to find lawn bowlers in the vast green center competeting in a traditional English sport similar to bocce ball, though, I would say it draws more of a golf-like crowd than a bowling-like crowd, if you know what I mean. Score a table along the 11th Street side, order an English brew (Kirk can tell you more about the selections), fish & chips and just sit back & take it all in - people-watching at it's prime. Or, if you prefer, come on a Sunday night and take in an outdoor movie. It's usually a British film like the Monty Python or wanna-be British film like Austin Powers, either way, you won't be disappointed. Otherwise, depending on the year, come here for the World Cup tournament. Last year it was insane - I use to think everyone hated soccer, or maybe they just love Brit's? Still not sure.
Before I sign off, I just have to make a note about the sweet British man that is always there to greet you. British in every way possible (clarification, in good way) he is the heart & soul of this place. I heard he use to own it, sold it & now just works there for fun. True or not, that speaks volumes about a place - a place you can work at "just for fun." After all, that's what this place is all about.
Pictured is Kirk with the British guy I always look forward to seeing (taken last winter). By the way, Brit's offers a completely different experience in the winter, but I don't want to talk about the winter now, so, stay tuned for more in the coming months. . .
